On Wednesday, May 25, 2016, Jerusalem proudly launched its annual Light Festival. For the week of the festival, thousands of visitors from all over the world, explore the impressive light installations that are sprawled throughout the Old City and parts of downtown Jerusalem.
One of those visitors, Tova Knecht, a blogger experienced the Jerusalem Light Festival for the first time.
Here’s her take on one of Jerusalem’s most popular and unique annual festivals.
Jerusalem, is aglow this week as The 2016 Light Festival, in its eighth season, illuminates the ancient city walls. As night falls, visitors are invited to witness the artwork of radiating light from global artists. It is a brilliant sight to see historic sites used as backdrops for today’s modern artistic installations.
As I strolled through the majestic Old City walls, together with tens of thousands of other visitors, I felt a captivating pull by the enchanting colors of light. Through light sculptures and statues, water shows, and different genres of music, I was mesmerized. My senses transcended nature as I felt the atmosphere all around me come to life before my eyes.
With my beautiful color-coordinated map in hand, I followed one of the four distinguishable routes laid out before me. Every attraction was marked with precise details and explanations. As I passed by each display, the joy on the spectators’ faces was visible as their eyes sparkled by the light and their smiles danced on their faces. The dancing traveled down to their feet as they felt the music pulse through their bodies.

Cameras in hand, visitors to the site couldn’t take enough pictures and videos. If I checked on the Light Show’s hashtag, #LightInJerusalem, I’d find all the thousands of pictures and videos. The light Festival is a photographer’s dream as just changing an angle captures the same art in a completely different way.
My favorite part of the night may have been getting photographed outside the Churva Synogogue, by Instagram_Israel’s Ziv Shaked inside the ITravelJerusalem Instagram square. It was another modern way to engage and interact with the visitors experiencing the event.

It was clear to see as I stood in the courtyard facing the video projections onto the ancient buildings, that this festival set out to achieve a magical experience. It was perfect for every age range, couples wanting a romantic evening, and a family friendly night activity.
This festival exceeded everyone’s expectations. We all gushed with excitement as the 3D characters jumped out before us while wearing our fashionable 3D glasses.
We squealed in delight as we were splashed by the spray from the water show. And we stood frozen, mouths agape, as we were captivated by the operatic music filling the alleyways.
The amazing light festival was so impressive that one time just won’t suffice. I’m going to come back with my kids to see how their faces sparkle in the city’s glory and the amazing light structures.
I am thrilled that I was there to witness The Old City wearing her colorful lights proudly.
